Karen Marshall

Karen Marshall currently leads the Degree Apprenticeship and Outreach and Engagement Programmes at Accenture’s Newcastle Delivery Centre.

Liaising with delivery partners, schools and key regional digital partners, the programme delivers engagement activities promoting digital careers to 20,000 young people, teachers and parents across the North East each year.

Karen has worked for over 30 years with Digital and Technology companies, supporting strategic collaborations to influence and advise on the development of qualifications, products, services, policies and strategies to address regional skills needs.

Ryan Maughan

Managing Director of AVID Technology Group Limited

Ryan leads a talented team at AVID, developing technology solutions to improve the efficiency and emissions from vehicles and machinery through smart electrification. He has vast engineering experience in high performance motorsport and precision component manufacturing sectors. Ryan has led acquisitions and disposals of business units to major corporates and also successfully raised business funding across a range of industries including oil and gas, chemical process, defence and electronics manufacturing.

Patrick Melia

Patrick is driven by a desire to ensure the delivery of high quality services that enable residents to live healthy and independently economic lives, safely in their communities.

He understands that strong partnerships across the public, business and voluntary and communities sectors, with everyone working to a common goal, are fundamental to this.

Patrick is committed to leading a significant change programme within Sunderland City Council to ensure that it delivers outstanding services for residents and that Sunderland continues to be a great place for residents to live, for businesses to thrive and for visitors to enjoy.

His priorities for the city include major physical regeneration of the City Centre to create a vibrant place for people to live, work and visit and to create more jobs for people in the local community.

Patrick was previously Chief Executive with North Tyneside Council, where he utilised his extensive record on delivering major projects, involving multiple partnerships, by providing leadership for the transformation of the 13 hectares of prime Enterprise Zone land at Swans into a hub for the offshore, renewable energy and advanced engineering sectors.  To provide around 1,000 new jobs for the North East and the delivery of the North Tyneside Seafront Master Plan, including investment of £36m into the coastal area, ultimately bringing the much loved iconic Spanish City back to life.

Patrick, who secured a Masters in Business Administration at Durham University’s Business School has previously held roles at Board-level in Police, Probation and the Health Sector and is Chair of a Multi Academy Trust.

Pat Richie

Chief Executive of Newcastle City Council

Pat joined Newcastle City Council as Chief Executive in 2013.  Since then, she has overseen a period of sustained, leading-edge growth and renewal in the city, at the Stephenson Quarter site, delivering the impressive Rise housing development at Scotswood and playing a leading role in securing the multi-million-pound investment deal to bring Legal and General to Newcastle’s flagship Helix development.  Alongside this, Pat has established a culture of transformation in the way the Council delivers services with partners.  This includes creating innovative new models for leisure and parks as well as reforming services which protect the most vulnerable people such as children’s social care and delivering new, supported housing fit for the future.

Pat continues to play an active role in shaping and influencing national policy and regularly contributes to national thinking on key policy issues such as public service reform, housing and transport.  She has taken a leading role in driving proposals for devolution of powers and funding for the region and led on negotiations with government for the North of Tyne devolution deal.

Pat is the interim chief executive of the new North of Tyne Combined Authority.

Pat worked closely with police and other partners to respond and support victims as part of Operation Sanctuary and led the high profile media response on conclusion of the trials.

Pat is a former Chief Executive of the Homes and Community Agency (HCA) where she led delivery of the Affordable Homes Programme, decent homes, and locally led economic development.

Before joining HCA, Pat was Assistant Chief Executive and Director of Strategy at One North East, leading the Regional Economic Strategy and action plan, as well as leading development of the Objective 2 programme for the North East. Prior to this, she was Deputy Chief Executive of The Wise Group, a prominent employment and training company in Scotland and the North of England.

Ian Richards

Investment Board Adviser.

As one of the Directors of Northstar, Ian oversees the investment team and leads on company exit strategies.

Ian began his career at NatWest, where he held a variety of positions in the retail and corporate banking sectors. In addition to having over 20 years’ experience in venture capital and private equity, Ian is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, a Member of the Institute of Commercial Management and was an elected Corporate Finance Representative for The Securities Institute. He is a Member of the Entrepreneurs Forum and has mentored early stage business leaders through the Forum’s programmes.

Ian also works with The Prince’s Trust, speaking at events to inspire future generations of entrepreneurs.

Jane Robinson

Dean for Engagement and Place at Newcastle University

Jane Robinson is Dean for engagement and place at Newcastle University.  Prior to joining Newcastle University, she was Chief Executive of Gateshead Council and played a key role in the establishment of the North East Combined Authority and the development of the Local Enterprise Partnership. She began her career in the cultural sector and pioneered programmes to support the development of the Creative Industries.

Throughout her career she has been involved in a wide range of projects and partnerships to support economic and business growth in the North East of England

Steve Underwood

Private sector, Business Growth Board Member

Steve Underwood is Managing Partner for Dentsu Aegis, a global marketing services group that employs over 45,000 people across 143 countries, delivering solutions for clients that enable them to succeed in the digital economy. As a member of the northern Dentsu board & leadership team, Steve leads the strategic direction for the largest regional marketing agency outside London, with 800+ team members, across nine agency brands in four locations.

Annie Laverty

Annie was formally appointed to the role of Chief People Officer for the new NHS Integrated Care Board for the North East and North Cumbria in July 2022 – an exciting opportunity to work with Exec colleagues and all system partners, to value and respect all people working in health and care services, to understand and respond to the health needs of our population an ensure fairer outcomes with access to high quality, safe and compassionate health services across the North East and North Cumbria.

Prior to that she worked in an outstanding provider organisation, Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust as Director of Patient Experience since December 2009 – this was a new senior leadership role for Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, designed to strengthen Board accountability and ensure visibility and momentum for a trust wide Patient Experience Programme. In 2018 her responsibilities expanded to embrace a new role as Chief Experience Officer. It is the first post of its kind in the NHS, with Board level responsibility for leading improvements in staff experience and well-being and integrating this with the existing Northumbria patient experience programme.

Annie is a Health Foundation Generation Q fellow – a pioneering programme, aimed at developing a new generation of skilled and effective leaders of quality improvement in healthcare. She was a founding director of RUBIS Qi, which was established in 2016 – an externally facing improvement arm of Northumbria Healthcare and NHS consultancy offering coaching and improvement support across the NHS.

Before joining the executive management team in 2009, Annie enjoyed 13 years of senior clinical leadership responsibilities as Clinical director of the award winning, Stroke Northumbria service, as well as Allied Health Professional lead for the North East Cardiovascular Network. 

Annie is a speech and language therapist, qualified mediator, teacher and senior lecturer. Her particular interests lie in the development of clinical practice within education, coproduction and the role of the service users as teachers.
