The North East’s Energy for Growth strategy aims to drive economic growth in the North East while also bringing sector partners together to deliver at scale on national energy strategy.
The strategy is identifies themes where the North East can both contribute to national policy and bring more and better jobs to the region, ranging from low-emission transport to heat networks, and geothermal energy from old mine workings.
These themes are organised into four distinct workstreams through which we work with partners to build and support a pipeline of forthcoming projects around these themes, to help us to achieve the aims of the strategy.
Our Energy for Growth Strategy was developed as part of the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy’s Local Energy Programme. Through this programme the North East LEP is part of the North East and Yorkshire Energy Hub, where we work with other regional LEP’s, and the wider Hub network, to collaborate on energy policy and projects.
Energy Innovation and Demonstration
The North East is home to a unique and comprehensive asset base for innovating, demonstrating and delivering solutions to global energy challenges. The North East Energy Catalyst unites these strengths.
The North East has a range of opportunities to deliver regional energy projects, which will make a significant contribution towards regional and national net zero goals.
The LEP is working with partners to support projects to be brought forward at scale across heat, power and transport, including technologies where the region is taking a national lead, such as mine energy and heat networks
Subsea and Offshore Energy
The North East’s offshore energy and subsea technology cluster is nationally and globally recognised, the region is also understood as an international centre for R&D and skills.
The region stands to benefit from both new and existing global market opportunities across the blue economy and offshore renewables and is identified as a key cluster for delivery of the offshore wind sector deal specifically. Supporting employment, competitiveness and productivity in this sector is a strategic energy opportunity for the North East.
