Blyth Workspace development nears first anniversary

A quayside office development in Northumberland is nearing its first anniversary after it reached completion in March 2015, transforming a vacant plot into first-class contemporary managed offices, at the centre of the North East’s world-leading base for energy and research.

Blyth Workspace, which was supported by a loan from the North East Investment Fund, is now home to a range of North East companies which have moved into the 21,000 square feet of new office space.

Jeremy Middleton, Chair of the North East Local Economic Partnership (LEP) Investment Panel, said: “A £2.6m loan from the North East Investment Fund helped the development of Blyth Workspace get off the ground in 2013. Now the development is not only complete but is nearing its first anniversary as a centre for growing businesses in Northumberland.”

Companies based at Blyth Workspace benefit from the development’s proximity to the Port of Blyth and Narec, the National Renewable Energy Centre.

Cllr Dave Ledger, Arch Chair and Deputy Leader of Northumberland County Council said: “Working with the North East LEP and gaining support from the Investment Fund was pivotal in the success of Blyth Workspace. A year on from completion we’re in a fantastic position, seeing the various businesses located here flourishing and growing.”

Blyth Workspace was developed by Arch, the Northumberland development company. The facilities at the site include super-fast broadband, rapid electric car charging points and five years’ free business rates, as the site is located within the North East’s Enterprise Zone.

Jeremy Middleton added: “The development of Blyth Workspace has rejuvenated the site, which was previously vacant. It now provides a high quality base for business and has immense potential to enhance the area’s reputation as a centre of excellence for energy and research.”

BIC partners with EU to offer Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs Round Two

The North East Business and Innovation Centre (BIC) has once again partnered with the European Union to help encourage businesses to exchange knowledge and collaborate.

Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs programme offers those in the early stages of starting a business the opportunity to spend three to four months in a business overseas. The programme also allows for established businesses in the north east to act as ‘host’ and to welcome a European entrepreneur to work with them.

The programme is funded by the European Commission and both parties will benefit from broadening their network of contacts, gaining fresh ideas and ultimately to open up new opportunities. Heading up the programme in the region, business development manager, Louise Hardy commented: “I am delighted that the BIC can once again offer this programme to the region, it really is a win win for both parties.

“I am on hand to help guide applicants through the process and remain the point of contact prior, during and beyond the exchange.

“The programme is fundamentally about breaking down barriers, encouraging businesses to cross borders and adopt an entrepreneurial mind-set, something the BIC has endorsed for over 20 years.

“Just last year we achieved the European BIC Network accreditation for the 21st year in a row and continue to forge links throughout Europe in support of the businesses we represent.”

Manufacturing and service sector growth underpinning record numbers in work

A continued surge in North East jobs is being fuelled by manufacturing and the service sector, today’s Labour Market statistics reveal.

North East LEP Chief Economist Chris Milne pointed to record employment statistics being driven by both the manufacturing and service sectors, as the North East narrowed the employment rate gap with the UK to 3.7 percentage points.

The percentage of people aged between 16 and 64 in employment in the North East in the latest quarter between October and December 2015 stands at a record 70.4%, up 2.1 percentage points on the previous quarter.

A total of 1.2m people are now in work in the North East – the highest ever recorded figure.

The final quarter of 2015 also saw the UK employment rate rise by 0.4 percentage points to 74.1%.

Today’s figures show that there are 9,000 more jobs in manufacturing and 28,000 more in the service sector, the two main sectors driving new employment growth in the region.

Unemployment is down 0.4 percentage points in the last quarter and people claiming Job Seekers Allowance is also down.

Economic inactivity has also fallen in the same period, down by 2.1 percentage points in the last quarter.

The statistics reveal that more people want to work and the number of people citing both long and short-term sickness as a reason for inactivity has fallen.

Chris said: “While we must not get carried away by short term fluctuations in statistics, today’s labour market figures give us reason for optimism.

“We are seeing a longer term trend towards an improved labour market picture in the North East, driven by job creation in a broad range of sectors.

“Manufacturing job growth demonstrates growing demand for the things we produce in the region and service sector job creation indicates broader economic growth and a sense of prosperity.

“Over the past year private service sector job growth in administration and support services and accommodation and food services has been particularly important, delivering 19,000 more jobs combined.

“The service sector will remain an important sector for economic growth of the region, and has more than compensated for public sector job losses over the past year.”

Chris continued: “Labour market inactivity has been a real challenge for the North East economy and with the national economy reaching full employment, it is essential that we get more people back into the labour market so that we can take advantage of economic growth opportunities.

“At 23.3%, we now have the lowest inactivity rate since the second quarter of 2014, where we hit an all-time low of 22.9%. We still need to do more to get people aged 50 plus back into work with a third of those in the inactive group.

“However, looking at today’s figures against a backdrop of strong GVA growth over the past few years we can see that the North East is on the up and good progress is being made towards achieving what we have set out in our strategic economic plan; 100,000 more jobs by 2024.”

Innovation is all about energy

Colin Bell, Business Growth Director at the North East LEP, gives an insight into high growth businesses and how positive energy can make all the different to business growth.

It’s fascinating to work with high growth businesses; you know they are different as soon as you walk in the door. Why? Because you can feel the buzz of energy and excitement all around, everyone is cheerfully busy, people go out of their way to make you feel welcome, are totally engaged in what they are doing and although the rate of growth causes problems, they deal with them, as they are locked in a continuous state of adaptation and innovation.

What’s interesting about such businesses is that they don’t actually consider themselves to be innovative – it’s just the way they are and what they do!

The opposite is true of businesses that lack real growth potential; they lack enthusiasm, there is a feeling of negativity, people are reluctant to take ownership and responsibility, people don’t follow through on actions, mediocrity is the norm, anything involving risk is belittled – just writing this is sapping my energy.

Think about it, spend the day with a bunch of negative people and it will bring your energy levels right down, spend it with a group of positive people looking for a challenge (and a bit of fun) and your energy levels will go through the roof.

How can you harness energy?

“Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be changed from one form to another.” Albert Einstein

If energy is critical to innovation then it’s essential that it be channelled into a form that is conducive to the creation of an innovation culture.

You can only feel energised about something if you are truly connected with it, gain pleasure from doing it and when it directly aligns to the fulfilment of your aspirations. Great leaders therefore make sure that they:

• get the right people, in the right places, doing the things that energise them;
• recognise that you can’t innovate in a vacuum and therefore develop a deep connection between their people and the organisation’s vision, values and purpose which provide the context for innovation and change;
• generate energy through achieving the optimum balance between personal and business aspirations;
• develop great teams, packed with ‘A’ players who all understand and are committed to get the best out of each other;
• set stretching goals that demand a different and better way of doing things and inject a sense of urgency;
• make sure that their people have the right balance of challenge and support to achieve high performance;
• invest their time in coaching and developing their people to be the best that they can possibly be;
• create an environment that doesn’t deal with problems, only solutions, that focuses on the ‘what if’ and the ‘can do’ rather than the ‘can’t do.’ Negativity is simply not tolerated (whilst challenging questions are).

Have a say on the future of transport in the North East

Today the consultation window opens to give people across the North East a chance to talk about the future of transport throughout the region.

The North East Combined Authority (neca) is setting the wheels in motion for plans to launch a 20-year ‘Transport Manifesto’ that covers both ‘urban and rural’ geographic areas of Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland.

The manifesto ‘Our Journey’ will feed into the local transport plan for the combined authority area and will set out how neca intends to deliver on its ambition to promote affordable, attractive, reliable, safe, healthy transport choices for businesses, residents and visitors.

If you’ve ever been on a journey using local transport and said to yourself “I should really mention this to someone” – whether it be good or bad, then now is your chance.

The outcome of the manifesto will be beneficial to residents, businesses and visitors to the North East as transport is a vital commodity that keeps the region moving.

The consultation will look at a variety of transport options including road, rail, air and sea.

The North East Combined Authority area ‘Transport Facts’ at a glance:

• Covers 3,200 square miles of urban and rural communities
• 2 million residents
• 4.1 million visitors a year
• 200,000 people commuting into urban centres
• 38,000 small and medium-sized enterprises
• The largest car plant in the UK by far

Newcastle City Councillor Nick Forbes, Chair of the Transport North East Committee, said: “The aim of this Transport Manifesto is to put passengers at the heart of the North East’s transport network.

“Across the region, people rightly demand a transport system that works for them, that is reliable, easy to use and affordable. Now is your chance to ensure you have a say over how we tackle the issues holding us back as a region.

“For the first time in many decades the region is coming together, as Transport North East, to set a vision. But it is not up to politicians to decide on our transport priorities; the vision of the region has to be one we all contribute to. This document will guide our way for the next two decades, from everything to our approach to Metro ticket prices to which major roads we seek to upgrade.

“It is the passengers, the motorists, the cyclists and other transport users who will shape this region, and their feedback on this manifesto is vital.”

The Transport Manifesto will help to empower the region and reinforce its position of being a national and international force. It will allow the subject of transport to underline its importance in areas such as economic growth, the environment and health.

Durham County Cllr Neil Foster, vice chair of Transport North East Committee, said: “Having efficient and reliable transport systems in place is a crucial part of our drive for economic growth.

“We need to ensure that residents in both urban and rural areas, whether they travel by car, use public transport or cycle, can access services, leisure, jobs and training opportunities.

“Businesses – including those which are already based in the North East and those thinking of investing here – need to be able to have confidence in the transport networks within our region and those which connect us to national and international markets.

“We want people’s views on these important transport plans which will help to shape our region over the next 20 years.”

Another valuable feature of the Transport Manifesto is the opportunity to discuss and raise the public profile of ‘Sustainable Travel’ that helps to reduce carbon emissions into the environment and minimise local air pollution. Sustainable Travel represents areas of transport like walking, cycling, public transport, car sharing and taxis – where people use leg and lung power or join others on their travels.

Northumberland County Councillor Allan Hepple, vice chair of Transport North East Committee, said: “It’s important people take this opportunity to put their views forward.

“As a largely rural county, many residents and visitors will have first-hand experience of the difficulties that can be faced in travelling between areas using public transport.

“If we are to develop the infrastructure and grow the economy of this region it’s vital the right transport options are in place. This consultation is a great opportunity for people to have their say on future plans.”

North Tyneside Councillor John Harrison, vice chair of Transport North East Committee, said: “We strongly believe that by working together to get the correct transport infrastructure in place, the region’s economy will be in a great position to prosper.

“It is important that residents and visitors to the North East are able to rely on good transport and this manifesto is a significant step forward towards reaching our goal.

“This is an excellent opportunity for the public to shape transport in the region and I would encourage as many people as possible to have their say on the manifesto before the deadline on April 8.”

Whether you use transport for the school run, getting to work, visiting friends, going shopping, moving goods or exploring the region – the manifesto team would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions.

The best way to cast your vote or send in your views is by visiting the NECA website www.northeastca.gov.uk/transport-north-east-and-transport-manifesto or by contacting 0191 277 1156 for a hard copy to be posted out to you.

The closing date for responses is Friday 8th April 2016.

International Festival for Business 2016

From 13 June – 1 July 2016, thousands of businesses from across the world will descend on Exhibition Centre Liverpool for three weeks of events, networking and deal making as part of this year’s International Festival for Business.

A global marketplace that brings together leaders of industry from all corners of the world, the International Festival for Business is the UK’s biggest business event and offers organisations in the North East a unique opportunity to secure new customers, partners, and to exchange ideas and inspiration.

An evaluation of the 2014 International Festival for Business showed that companies secured £280 million of investment as a direct result of the event.

The festival is supported by the UK government and over its three-week run delivers a series of events, talks, workshops and dinners clustered round three themes; manufacturing, creative and digital, and energy and environment.

Colin Bell, Business Growth Director at the North East LEP said: “The International Festival for Business provides the North East with a huge opportunity. As a meeting place for the world’s business elite, it’s a place to network, share ideas but importantly, win and secure new business.

“It’s vital we have a strong presence at the event so we can showcase the world-class businesses and skills in our region. From creative and digital to offshore and marine, we are leading the way in key sectors. The advancements we are making in science and healthcare make us a world leader and the International Festival for Business is the perfect place for us to shout about our achievements.”

7,000 face-to-face meetings with potential new customers are expected to take place during this year’s event.

Festival Director Ian McCarthy said: “The festival will offer very concrete opportunities for companies to win new business from potential clients and customers from right across the UK and world.

“We know through the independent evaluation carried out that IFB2014 was directly responsible for some £280m of new sales and deals and our ambition is to help businesses achieve even more value.”

This year’s festival also includes an inspiring series of talks from speakers including former South African President FW De Klerk, key architect of the UK Northern Powerhouse, Lord O’Neil and CEO of Severn Trent Water, Liv Garfield. The Blue Skies series will take place at the end of each day at the Festival.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: “Britain is open for business, so for anyone involved in enterprise the International Festival for Business is the place to be. Make sure you’re there to make the most of it.”
