Philip Aldridge

Before being appointed Chief Executive of North East of England Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC) in April 2018, Philip worked with NEPIC for 6 years helping deliver ERDF projects and serving its pharmaceutical members. Prior to his time with the Cluster, Philip held roles at the Centre of Excellence in Life Sciences and technical management positions within GSK in the UK and US. With extensive pharmaceutical process development and manufacturing experience in the fields of antibiotics and biopharmaceuticals, Philip holds a first degree in Biochemistry, a masters in Biochemical Engineering and is a member of the Institution of Chemical Engineers.

Paul Butler

CEO of North East Automotive Alliance

Paul Butler joined the North East Automotive Alliance (NEAA) as Chief Executive Officer in March 2015 and quickly established the NEAA as the leading automotive cluster in the UK. He represents the regions automotive sector on the Automotive Council’s Supply Chain Group, Digitlisation Group and Regional Economic Forum. Paul also represents the NEAA on the European Automotive Clusters Network and is the only UK based Cluster Benchmarking Expert for the European Secretariat for Cluster Analysis (ESCA).

Prior to this Paul spent 10 years with the North East Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC), has supported the delivery of the UKTI Trade services across the North East, and has previously ran his own publishing business.

Paul has extensive knowledge of the business support environment at both regional, national and international level, and holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Durham.

Adrian Coates

Area Lead – Government's Cities and Local Growth Unit

Area Lead – North East Local Enterprise Partnership, Cities and Local Growth Unit (Yorkshire, Humber and the North East) – covering Growth Deal, and North East Local Industrial Strategy.

Steve Martin

Steven is Senior operations manager for the North of Northumberland Tyne and Wear DWP District with responsibility for 13 Jobcentres on the North of the Tyne covering from Newcastle to Berwick.

Steven has worked for over 37 years for DWP across our Region and is passionate about ensuring all DWP customers receive a consistently high standard of service to suit their individual need

In Steve’s previous roles he has worked extensively with Partners and stakeholders including a short spell previously in Nort Tyneside.

Outside of work Steve enjoys watching a number of sports including football and Rugby and enjoys walks along his local Seaburn coastline.

Dr Arun Harish

Director of Strategy, CPI

Arun is a deep-tech innovation leader and strategist with diverse experience in strategy development, innovation consulting, technology commercialisation and raising public and private finance.

As the Director of Strategy at CPI (founding member of the UK’s High Value Manufacturing Catapult), Arun leads on developing strategies for growth and impact generation, supporting commercialisation of disruptive innovations in healthcare and sustainability, and is a champion for innovation-led regional economic growth and inward investment. He is a thought leader on investment readiness of high-growth potential SMEs, sits on CPI Enterprises’ Investment Committee and has Chaired European Commission’s expert panels on investment readiness linked with SME actions.

Prior to CPI, Arun has worked with venture capital funded technology start-ups in the UK and India, where he held business development and R&D roles. Arun holds a PhD in medical nanotechnologies from the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Newcastle University and an MBA from Warwick Business School, where he specialised in entrepreneurial finance and venture capital. Arun has also co-founded UTSAAH (Uniting to Sustain and Assist Himalayan communities), a small UK based charity that supports healthcare and conservation initiatives in the Indian Himalayas.

Mark Thompson

Main Board Member and Investment Board Member.

Mark Thompson is managing partner of Ryder Architecture, where he is responsible for the strategic development of the highly successful design company with offices across the UK and a growing international portfolio from offices in Hong Kong and Vancouver.

Dr Sam Whitehouse

Board Member

Sam is Executive chairman of a chemical development and manufacturer, High Force Research Ltd based in Durham and CEO of LightOx Ltd, developing oral cancer therapies. With a demonstrated history of working in the medical technologies and commercialisation, Sam has successfully built a number of companies in the North East.

Working across a range of industrial applications including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, diagnostics, and life sciences, Sam was  also a Royal Society Entrepreneur in Residence, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a passionate advocate of entrepreneurial activities in the region.

Cllr Amanda Hopgood

Board Member

Cllr Hopgood became Leader of Durham County Council in May 2021. She was honoured to be selected to lead the newly formed Joint Administration and has made history be being the first female Leader of the Council.

Amanda has led the Liberal Democrat group on Durham County Council since 2013. She was first elected as a Councillor on Durham City Council in 2005 and represents the ward of Framwellgate Moor and Newton Hall. She is a trustee and member of several organisations within her ward and represents the Council on local, regional and national organisations. Amanda is married with two grown up children and prior to the formation of the unitary authority she worked in financial services as a mortgage adviser.

Councillor Nick Kemp

Board Member.

Councillor Nick Kemp was elected to Newcastle City Council in 2002 to represent the East End Ward, Byker. He held a series of roles including Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods.

Nick was elected to be Leader of Newcastle City Council in May 2022.

He has worked in a number of sectors, and currently runs a public affairs agency.

Nick is a trustee of the National Centre for Children’s Book.
